Novel Motion Circus

October 8, 2024 by Becky Krueger

Becky Krueger and Alex Devaux have trained together for years at the Madison Circus Space. In 2024, the pair started Novel Motion Circus with the dream of bringing circus arts to youth all over the country. They believe that circus and play can inspire our young audiences to achieve new goals through practice, communication, and collaboration.

We offer classes for youth ages 6+ in various disciplines, including German wheel, trapeze, and juggling. We also offer private lessons, try-its, and corporate entertainment for youth and adults. Please visit our website, novelmotioncircus.com for more information and to register for classes.

Flying Trapeze Madison

What is Flying Trapeze Madison?

Flying Trapeze Madison provides recreational trapeze classes and opportunities to our community, regardless of ability, strength, or experience. Everyone in the flying trapeze family is welcome, from beginners to professional performers. Our goal is to empower our clients to try something new and exciting or to build on learned skills in a safe, welcoming environment. We want to share our enthusiasm for flying trapeze and circus arts with everyone!

What to expect for first-time students

During a student’s first class we will take them through ground school, where we explain to them what will take place and do some ground exercises to prepare the students for jumping off the platform, swinging on the bar, and falling into the net with safety lines. Beginner students start off with a first swing and work their way through backflip dismounts, knee hang, and a catch with a catcher if they are ready. Students work at their own pace and progress based on their comfort and skill, and receive feedback from a coach on how to work on the skills they are learning. Most participants are able to work through those basic moves in their first class.

Head Over Wheels

April 1, 2013 by Carly Schuna

We teach German wheel, straps, static trapeze, and duo trapeze. All activities are open to ages 13+. Scroll down for more info on each!

SAMPLER WORKSHOPS

Head over Wheels Sampler Workshops are completely FREE to attend! Try out everything Head over Wheels has to offer, including German wheel, solo trapeze, duo trapeze, and aerial straps. Bring your family, your friends, your enemies, everyone! Each workshop is capped at 20 participants to make sure everyone has the best experience possible. Registration is required! Next workshop:

Saturday, October 10th, 3:15-4:45pm

GERMAN WHEEL

For Mixed-Level classes, no experience is required! If you’re new, you’ll get a thorough and awesome introduction to the German wheel. You’ll learn to rock on the wheel, roll with a partner, do cartwheels, and much more. This class will build the fundamental experience you need to progress further with wheel, and it’s also a great refresher for anyone with some prior experience. For ages 13+. Those with prior experience will work on their existing skills and progress them. Have fun learning cartwheel variations, level up your rocking, keep working on your spiral, and learn some sit and stomach tricks!

TRAPEZE

All trapeze classes focus on dynamic skills, including beats, circles, half and full releases, twists, rolls, drops, etc.

Solo Trapeze

Beginning and Advanced Beginning classes concentrate on strength-building to prepare for dynamic elements. Students will practice timing, coordination, beats, and basic dynamic skills that are the foundations for more difficult movements. No experience required for Beginning students. Prereqs for Advanced Beginning: Some trapeze experience required. Students must be able to do at least two controlled pull-up negatives (slow lowers) and must be able to invert independently (foot tagging is OK).

Intermediate/Advanced class involves focused conditioning and drills for complicated dynamic movements. Students will work on combinations and are more likely to work at full height of the trapeze. Prereqs for Intermediate/Advanced: Students must be able to do at least two full pull-ups, invert independently, perform a pullover at full height, and have comfort with beats (from knees and long hang).

Duo Trapeze

Beginning Duo Trapeze is a series that will teach you the fundamental concepts of aerial partnering. Learn to base, fly, or both — no experience required! Bases will learn the catcher’s hang and sit basing positions and will practice taking a flyer’s weight in those positions. Flyers will learn how to fall safely, successfully work with their bases, and hold body tension. All are welcome! Bring a partner, bring a friend, bring someone you’d like to drop a lot, or just bring yourself — no partner required 🙂 It is recommended but not required that students be able to do a pull-up.

Advanced Beginning Duo Trapeze builds on concepts from the beginning duo class series. We will work on dialing in timing with our partner and developing the strength and skills needed for dynamic movement.

Duo Trapeze on Tuesdays at 8pm is a drop-in, mixed-level class. For students new to class, prior aerial experience is recommended but not required. Bases will work in catcher’s hang and occasionally in sitting position to base flyers in dynamic skills and combinations. Newer bases will build up tolerance to the basing position, gain strength, and focus on timing. Flyers will work in hands and occasionally other positions (feet, legs, knees, etc.).

Aerial Straps

Classes focus on building the strength and control needed for dynamic aerial straps. Students will practice timing, coordination, swings/beats, spinning, flares, C-shaping, and other foundational skills for more advanced dynamic movement. Open to drop-ins. All levels welcome, but students must be able to invert independently and do at least one pull-up.
