Are you sick of being a slave to the wall in your handstand practice? If you want to take steps toward training a freestanding, independent handstand, this workshop is for you!
Moving away from the wall can be scary, so we’ll go slowly. Starting with a thorough wrist and shoulder warm-up, we’ll dive into some floor exercises to take you through your natural range of motion and prep you for good alignment and strong pushing. After that, we’ll drill a few back-to-wall handstands, face-to-wall handstands, and cartwheels. Using spotters and mats, you’ll learn a progression you can use at your own pace to eventually move away from the wall and feel confident in bailing out of an unassisted handstand — giving you the freedom to train wherever and whenever you want!
PREREQUISITE: Ability to hold a 30-second handstand against the wall and exit with control
Carly Schuna spends most of her circus time teaching and practicing German wheel and static trapeze at the Madison Circus Space. In addition to her own handstand practice, she has trained handstands with coaches at Ecole de Cirque de Québec and with Chris Gatti at the New England Center for Circus Arts. She has been working on her handstand for many years, has messed up hundreds of times, and has extensive experience with getting out of handstands that do not work.
