“A few well-designed movements, properly performed in a balanced sequence, are worth hours of doing sloppy calisthenics or forced contortion.” – Joseph Pilates
The Pilates method, before it became a “mainstream” form of exercise, was very popular with circus artists, dancers, gymnasts, and other athletes, primarily because it is an extremely versatile and adaptable method of conditioning the body for the extraordinary demands placed on it by the activities we are so passionate about.
Through a consistent Pilates practice, we can condition our bodies AND our minds, so that we can fully experience the joy of circus, moving as freely as possible in our bodies and experiencing the joy of a strong mind-body connection.
Some of the many benefits of Pilates include:
- Improved muscle strength (without bulking up); flexibility; coordination; agility; endurance; muscular control
- Builds body awareness, and teaches students how to feel and activate the correct muscles required for literally anything they want to do in life
- Enhances body control that is applicable to any activity/situation
- Improves posture, body alignment, balance, and proprioception
- Promotes relaxation and the release of tension
- Develops fluidity of movement that translates to your aerial/circus practice
Everything we do in our Pilates classes will incorporate the method’s core principles: breath, concentration, center, control, precision, and flow.
In this Pilates mat class, we will be moving through a flow of exercises that will move your spine in all directions, activate and challenge your entire core, strengthen and stabilize your shoulders and hips, get you to slow down and BREATHE while you FOCUS on your movements, learn and practice body awareness, and connect Pilates exercises to the movements you do as an aerialist or circus artist.
This class is for students who are new to Pilates, AND for students who have some experience with the method. Everyone will be challenged, and options will be offered for students who need to modify any exercises. We will be using props, such as mini balls, resistance bands, and foam rollers. **Please bring your own yoga mat to class.
About the Instructor
Laura is an ACE certified personal trainer with 10+ years of experience in her field, and a lifetime of practicing artistic movement – including gymnastics, figure skating, and competitive marching band color guard. She is also an aerialist (since 2013) and primarily spends her time on dance trapeze, lyra, sling, and silks. She has also completed two Pilates teacher trainings (so far): Complete Pilates Mat and Pilates for Aerialists teacher trainings with Twisted Bodies, and is also working her way through the complete Balanced Body Pilates teacher training curriculum.
Over the past few years, Laura has absorbed and implemented a mind-boggling amount of information on training the body to be in optimal condition for participating in circus arts, and combines her passion for general fitness and mindful movement with her passion for movement arts. Her approach combines the art of imperfection (giving yourself grace when you make mistakes, and permission to take imperfect action along your journey) with the art of moving mindfully with excellence, so that you make the most of everything you do and train your mind-body connection to help you move safely and with grace and efficiency both in the air and on the ground.
Classes currently taught by Laura at MCS: Aerial Conditioning; Pilates Mat; Aerialists of Steel (conditioning for lyra).
