Class Description
This class will provide a basic foundation in the Brazilian multi-faceted art of capoeira, focusing on the Angola style. The instruction will have a heavy focus on creativity and developing new movements patterns, aiming to foster individualized movement over mechanical repetition of demonstrated moves. Students will develop their own ginga, or sway, which serves as the core movement for a few basic kicks, dodges, and embellishing movements. Finally, students will learn some basic music skills to help create an energetic roda, or circle, to foster exciting and collaborative games of capoeira. No previous experience is necessary.
About the Instructor
Hi, I’m Brendan Loula, (or Capivara, in the capoeira world) and I’m a dedicated capoeirista with over 16 years of experience in the art form, having practiced with more than six different groups of varying styles. I’ve taught students of all ages since 2015 in classes ranging from individual lessons to large workshops of over 100 students. My full-time work as an elementary school special education teacher has reinforced my knowledge of the need for inclusion in all education, including capoeira. I believe that capoeira is for every person and every body if they want to be a part of it, and I try to embody that philosophy in my teaching. My goal is to help you move creatively and have fun while learning capoeira, to learn skills that will help you both inside the roda (capoeira circle) and in life.
