Join Wanda Fool for theatre and clown workshops at the Madison Circus Space. Learn from a former Ringling clown and current Queer Circus performer about make-up, stage presence, and clowning!
Stage makeup (Fri, 9/30, 6-6:45pm): Do you want to learn how to apply durable stage makeup? Do you have some ideas but aren’t quite sure how to translate them onto your face? We are going to talk all about what types of makeup you can use. Please bring your own materials because we are going to try things that work on your face, whatever that may look like.
Stage presence (Fri, 9/30, 7-7:45pm): Find your spot on stage, and breathe! It may sound easy but it’s harder than it sounds. We’ll talk about how you “carry yourself” while on stage and how to select an audience volunteer while ensuring their comfort. The goal is to find your presence and we will do it together.
Building an act from your skills (Fri, 9/30, 8-8:45pm): It’s often difficult to transfer a cool trick you’ve learned into something that you can show an audience as part of an act. Whether it’s juggling, your circus act, or something clown-related, this workshop is all about building your skills into an act. We will work on ideas together. Feel free to bring what you want to practice. This will be a hands-on workshop with your props (if they are small enough to carry with you) so we can celebrate discovery of new ways to work with them!
Unconventional characters (Sat, 10/1, 12-12:45 pm): This workshop will teach you how to build a character that stands out onstage, wherever that stage may be. We’ll use our whole bodies! We’re going to discover who you can be while still using what you’ve learned as a performer. It may be for a themed event or a strolling performance. We will think outside the box we usually stay inside. We will break a few rules and make a few new ones to challenge ourselves.
Comic movement (Sat, 10/1, 1-1:45 pm): This workshop will teach you how to find your movement as a funny character. We will talk about specifics such as double takes and timing. Mostly we will focus on finding YOUR movement style. It is a muscle that needs to be stretched. We’ll start with a warm up and then on to exploring what our bodies can do. Be ready to move around! Reminder: This is NOT a slapstick class. If you are looking to learn that, feel free to talk to me in between classes.
Clown Makeup Lab (Sat, 10/1, 5:30-6:15 pm): Let’s get a little messy! This workshop is for everyone interested in professional makeup. You can’t learn makeup by watching online because it will look different on you. Whether you are a seasoned professional or have never put clown makeup on in your life, I encourage you to come play around! If clown makeup is old hat to you, pick out a piece of your makeup you want to work on or change. If you’re not interested in clown makeup, but are interested in makeup generally, you should still sign up for this workshop… Makeup concepts apply broadly! Make sure to bring your own makeup to play with. Stay afterward to watch how Wanda applies her makeup for her show at 7pm!
Wanda Fool’s solo show! – The Clown with a Song in her Heart (or Two) – $5. (Sat, 10/1, 7-7:45pm) Wanda Fool will sing and play for you with a bit of silliness in between, and a lot of feeling! Come enjoy music, laughter, and a pretty rockin’ kazoo solo. Come at 7pm to revel in the ridiculous and maybe sing along! Admission to the show is $5
Clowning with an instrument (Sun, 10/2, 11-11:45am): This workshop will teach you to be funny with an instrument – whether you know how to play it or not. It’s about finding the funny, and we’re going to explore it together. You can also be the instrument as a singer. The possibilities are endless! Can’t sing? Doesn’t matter. Clowns aren’t supposed to be perfect. The point is to make a joyful, funny noise, and that is something everyone can do
About the Instructor
Julia Swanson, aka Wanda Fool or Miss Julia, is a performer with Queer Circus in Minneapolis and instructor at Mooseburger Clown Arts Camp. She performed as a Ringling Bros Circus clown for three years and with Culpepper Merriweather Circus on their Michigan tour. She has spent literally her entire life destined/doomed to be on stage in some capacity. With clowns (yes, real circus clowns) as parents, there really wasn’t much room to argue – not that she wanted to in the first place.
