Acro Club

November 15, 2016 by Deanna Schneider

Acro combines elements of acrobatics, yoga, and dance. It is a joyful expression of strength, flexibility and communication between 2 or more people. And it’s fun! In the summer, our community meets at the Farmer’s Market. But, from November to April, we’re indoors at the Madison Circus Space.

When: Saturdays from November to April, 10:00 a.m. to noon. (Check the Madison Circus Space calendar, as we are occasionally bumped for performances and events.)

What: Open Acro Jam. All levels and ages welcome. Children must be accompanied by adults. No formal instruction provided. However, we are always willing to get a newcomer started.

Cost: $5 for non MCS members. Free for MCS members.

Please read these great etiquette guidelines and the safety policy below and come with an open mind and a willingness to explore!

Acro Club Safety Policy:

  1. Everyone must sign a waiver each calendar year.
  2. Communication is key! If music is played, make sure it is at a low volume. It’s vitally important that spotters, bases and flyers can hear one another.
  3. Work within your safe skill-range. It can be tempting to try the big tricks before you’re ready. Don’t do it! We want you to be challenged. But, we want you to be safe.
  4. Use spotters! If you’re working on a new, challenging, or dangerous move, use spotters.
  5. Use crash mats when needed. We understand that there are times when crash mats will actually make things more dangerous (dynamic moves where the base needs to be able to move quickly, or spotters need to be able to move in circles around the base). But, if you’re working on a dangerous trick that would benefit from a crash mat, use one.
  6. Wear appropriate clothing – snug-fitting, non-slippery, easy-moving clothes work best. Remove any bling that could cut or injure your partner.
  7. Hosts can ask participants to stop any move they deem unsafe.
  8. People who the hosts consider dangerous to themselves or others may be asked to leave.

For more information:

Madison Circus Space Wheel Club Policy

GENERAL NOTES:

  • Wheel Club is an open practice time. It is not a time for formal instruction.
  • Wheel Club hosts do not assume any liability for any Wheel Club participants.
  • Wheel Club hosts reserve the right to ask any participant to stop practicing a particular movement or to leave the facility if they believe that participant is not exercising caution or adhering to proper safety protocols.

CYR WHEEL:

  • Wheel Club is open to all Cyr wheelers, including complete beginners.
  • Because all Cyr wheels are privately owned, brand-new wheelers must check in with club hosts to see which wheels are available for their use.
  • Wheelers performing advanced maneuvers or inverting in their wheels should always wear appropriate safety gear and ask for trained spotters while still learning.

GERMAN WHEEL:

  • Wheel Club is open to German wheelers who have completed a six-week Beginner class series or have equivalent prior experience. Complete beginners must obtain prior permission to come and may only participate with the assistance of an instructor.
  • Wheel Club is a time for wheelers to practice movements they have already learned rather than to attempt new skills.
  • Wheelers should always ask for trained spotters and wear appropriate safety gear, if applicable, while practicing movements over which they don’t yet have complete control. If trained spotters are not available, wheelers should stick to movements that present a low risk of falling and that they know how to get out of safely.
  • Skill sharing is permitted for movements that do not involve inversions out of straps (i.e. cartwheel variations, low sit rock and stomach rock, etc.). Approved instructors are permitted to teach more advanced movements during Wheel Club time, but participants who are not instructors may not attempt to teach those movements.

Hoop/Flow Jam

June 19, 2013 by MCS

We are an extremely nice group of people who practice to get better together in a fun and supportive environment. We meet Sundays from 6-8 pm either weekly or monthly in two distinct seasons.

All flow jams are currently on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • November through April: weekly meetings, and the second Sunday of the month is free!
  • May through October: monthly meetings, and all jams are free!
  • Confirm that Hoop/Flow Jam is meeting by checking the MCS Calendar.

We meet in the Main Room of the Madison Circus Space.

These open practice jams have no formal instruction, and are geared as a time to play,  practice, socialize with other hoopers and flow artists, and dance to the music.

All ages, experience levels, and flow disciplines are welcome, and those under 15 must be accompanied by adults. There are a ton of hoops, and some juggling equipment, poi, many sets of silk fans, and a set of tech fans available for use if you don’t have your own. The Madison Circus Space features 40 foot ceilings, a sprung wood floor, and also has mats available for use. There is a ton of space to move in.

Please sign up for the Hoop/Flow Madison email list to find out about any cancellations or changes to the schedule. We often cancel around holidays or for neighborhood festivals.

The cost to participate is $5 individual / $8 family to drop in or $20 individual / $30 family for an 8-pass. The 8-pass may be used within one year of purchase.
